The World of Charles Dickens

The World of Charles Dickens by Barry Falls – Laurence King – 1000 pieces

I had a great time with this puzzle, it was so much fun! Puzzles with a lot going on or a lot of buildings are not usually my thing, but this one was really entertaining. This is another puzzle from a swap with Penny; it’s so great that we don’t always have the same taste in puzzle images, because this way I get to do puzzles I wouldn’t normally go for and sometimes find out that even if the image isn’t something that connects with me that it can still be great fun to assemble.

This is only my third Laurence King puzzle, and the first one I’ve done that was manufactured in China. The previous ones I’ve done, Pop Art Puzzle and The World of Frankenstein were both manufactured in The Netherlands and were of excellent quality. A friend and fellow puzzle blogger from Europe told me about the bad quality of this brand’s puzzles that were made in China, so I’ve steered clear of those and only bought ones I could be certain where they were made. That being said, even though this was made in China it wasn’t too bad. We’ll start with the pros; the fit was exceptional (stay tuned for one of my famous puzzle standing up pictures), the finish was matte and had a wonderful hand feel, there were a good variety of piece shapes, and the image reproduction was excellent. On the negative side; this puzzle was secondhand from Penny, so with her disassembling it to put back in the box, the pieces showed that the chipboard used was far less superior – the tabs had already begun to fray and part of the image was delaminating. At the corners of many pieces the image was coming up and it made my usual post completion puzzle massage less satisfying as I didn’t want to cause any more damage by making the image come off even more.

Overall I’d say it was a good quality puzzle, but I much prefer the Netherlands made puzzles from this brand, they have the same quality as a Jumbo puzzle with an almost waxy feel to the finish and the much nicer chipboard. Just my opinion of course, please don’t come for me.

The image is so detailed with so many things to see, this is just one little section with many characters set in London. I’ll be honest and tell you that I have never read any of Dickens’ work, so I have no idea who these people are or anything about them. But you don’t need to know anything about the author (which I didn’t) to enjoy this puzzle, it’s just an entertaining image that makes for a fun assembly.

On the back of the very large (almost too big if you ask me) poster is this synopsis of Dickens’ life, with a legend of the characters and places represented in the artwork. It tells a little bit about each of his books, and shows you the people and places he wrote about. Very cool! I feel like I learned something after reading this, and that’s always a good thing in my book.

No one asked for it, but I did it anyway cause it makes me so very happy – puzzle standing up in the Stacey Stance picture!

Embroidery Table In Progress…

Embroidery Table by Andrew Farley – Milton Bradley (Big Ben) – 1000 pieces

I’m currently working on this gorgeous tableau of embroidery supplies, and all I can think about is how much mom would have loved this puzzle. I didn’t consciously plan it, but this is the puzzle I’m working on today – the seventh anniversary of her passing. How can it seem as if I just lost her yesterday and also that she’s been gone for way too long?

I found this beauty at the thrift store a month or so ago, and I’m hoping it’s complete because it really reminds me of my awesome momma; it was bagged inside the box, so there’s reason to think it may have all the pieces. The quality is fair, about the usual for a Milton Bradley puzzle, but the image reproduction is fabulous. The colors are bright and crisp, and everything looks as it should. Mom would have loved to have glued and framed this one for her craft room, of that I am sure.

It’s going really well, and I found myself getting out of bed last night when I couldn’t sleep just to sit in front of it and put a few pieces in – one of the clues that tells you how much fun the image is. There are only three trays of pieces left and I’ve gotten used to every single one. I know where things should go and I’m familiar with every shape and color so why can’t I just be left alone so I can sit in the puzzle room till it’s finished? I’m tired of taking breaks!

Most certainly this one will be finished today, I’m just not sure what to do with it once it’s finished. I could box it up and re-donate it to the local Goodwill. But I’m thinking I might want to host a giveaway with it in honor of my crafty momma who loved making things, assembling puzzles, and finding bargains at thrift stores – but I don’t even know if all the pieces are present and accounted for.

If it’s complete would anyone be interested in winning this gently used thrift store puzzle? It’s a gorgeous image and so far has been extremely entertaining to assemble.

We all miss you mom, more than words can express. 💔

Aristocats In Progress…

Aristocats – Ravensburger – 1000 pieces

This one got started two days ago, but there was almost no work at all done on it yesterday. Most of this assembly was done on day one, although I did put in a lot of the piano yesterday evening. It was going pretty well that first day, and I was thoroughly enjoying myself; hopefully when I get back to it later on today (if a morning nap helps to revive me) it’ll be just as much fun.

Thursday I took my son out later in the afternoon/evening, and it really wore me out. I spent almost all day Friday in bed trying to recover – still trying to recover this morning, actually. I got out of bed to take this picture and type up a small blurb about it, and then I’m right back to bed again.

I’m hoping when I do get back to the board that it continues to be as enjoyable as that first day – this movie for me in particular holds very dear memories of my momma. I’m missing her, but thinking of those memories also makes me smile. 💗

Simple Pleasures

Simple Pleasures by Steve Cameron – White Mountain – 1000 pieces

Happily, unlike the two previous White Mountain puzzles I’ve assembled, this one had very good quality and I enjoyed myself very much! I love the look of older advertising, or even images like this one where it’s in the style of old advertisements. Looks amazing and it made for great puzzling.

The fit on this puzzle was excellent, almost tight enough for me to stand the puzzle on end – which was a lovely change from the last two White Mountain puzzles whose fit was loose and floppy. Perhaps it’s where the puzzle was made, the type of chipboard, or even how sharp the dies that cut the pieces are. Whatever it was, this puzzle was very good in the fit department, which made me happy. The image reproduction was better as well, there were no blurry or fuzzy parts of the image. Overall I’d give this puzzle a very good rating, and I enjoyed myself from beginning to end!

This is one of life’s simple pleasures for me, a morning with peace and quiet and a perfect cup of coffee. Black, two sweeteners. Nothing fru-fru for me, coffee flavored coffee and that’s it. It’s a great way to start the day. Also, love the polka-dots in the background, it made these pieces easy to find.

Even if they’re store bought cookie dough, warm cookies from the oven are another of life’s simple pleasures that I relish. I was lucky enough to have a mom who made everything from scratch, and having warm cookies made with love and a tall glass of cold milk – makes me yearn for simpler times.

Of course I had to save the best part for last – completing a fun jigsaw puzzle in the middle of a jigsaw puzzle – truly a simple pleasure. All the pieces were pulled out on the initial sort, but they had to wait in their little container until everything else was finished.😉

This just speaks for itself, doesn’t it. If you know, you know. 🧩💖

Monsters

Monsters – Re-marks – 1000 pieces

This was a wonderfully entertaining puzzle that was even better than I’d hoped. I enjoyed every part of this puzzle – even the sorting if you can believe it. 😮 I’m letting my weird brain take over while I’m puzzling these days, and whatever way it decides it wants to assemble is what I do.

Don’t want to sort? Don’t! Want to puzzle without using an image to assist? Go for it! Want to let your OCD out to play and revel in lining up pieces on the trays and keeping everything neat and tidy? Of course you should! (See, I told you my brain was weird)

Re-marks has such a wonderful catalog of collage images; book covers, travel posters, movies, decades, themes like this one, etc. Almost every one of them looks good to me. The quality is good/very good, and this puzzle especially had an excellent fit which made me quite happy. The image reproduction was crisp and clean, and the random cut made for piece shapes that were varied and interesting. This was one of the best quality Re-marks puzzle I’ve assembled in a while.

There were so many sections that brought back memories that it was difficult to decide which ones should get a closeup. This collage isn’t just movie monsters, it has novels, comic books, tv shows, cereal, songs, albums, and even candy! If I let myself go on and on about all the panels that I wanted to talk about this would be an unbelievably long post and you would most likely get quite bored before the end. In the end I narrowed it down to only three, but trust me I could talk about MANY more than ones shown below.

As a dyed-in-the-wool comedy nerd, of course Young Frankenstein (pronounced Fronkensteen) was going to be one of my choices. It’s an excellent movie, and besides being extremely funny it also makes me think of my boys – they both love this movie and they also love to quote from it, sometimes ad nauseam. Additionally, seeing the movie poster has me feeling my age a bit today, as every one of the talented actors shown here are now gone and it’s a bit sad.

Still, the movie makes me happy and I can’t hear “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and not think of Peter Boyle and Gene Wilder singing and dancing and in general being ridiculous. It makes me laugh out loud every single time I see it. 😂

My youngest son picked out this puzzle for me to assemble, and after I said I would do it he went to his room and brought me back a copy of Frankenstein with this exact cover that he had just gotten out of the library that day. He then proceeded to tell me ALL about the book, Mary Shelley, and the many Frankenstein movies that have been made. I got a 15 minute Frankenstein lecture! None of this was new to me, when I assembled The World of Frankenstein almost three years ago I got almost the same lecture about the book, it’s origins, the author, etc. But any time my baby boy wants to engage with me is good and I’d happily sit through the lecture again to spend time with him talking TO me instead of AT me.

When I saw this section of the puzzle it made me so happy! I can’t even begin to count the number of times I read this book to my kids – complete with voices and over-the-top acting on my part – they loved it, and so did I. We didn’t read it much at bedtime though; they got more excited the closer we got to the end of the book, I got louder too, and it wasn’t really conducive to winding down and going to sleep. This puzzle brought back such a good memory of sharing this book with my babies. 💕

I had the best time with this puzzle, the whole process made me happy. I don’t really want to take it apart yet, it was too much fun!
