Progress is slow on this insane task I’ve set for the posse, but every piece found is a small triumph and there are many little old lady high fives being handed out. And let me tell you, gray-haired old ladies high fiving each other is giggle-inducing adorable!
My oldest son has gotten in on the act too, and apparently pops in the puzzle room when no one else is there to find a piece or two. Then he comes back when we’re working on it to proudly show us “this piece belongs to me”. I don’t blame him, each piece you find seems like such an accomplishment that you feel as though every connection should be witnessed by someone. I did it, I FOUND A PIECE!!
This puzzle is a beast! It doesn’t mean we’re not having a good time though. Mom came over 2 days in a row to play puzzle with me, and we’re having tons of fun. 🙂
As you can see we’ve been attempting to work on the edges. We find though that the pieces are so intricate and distinct that it we’re constantly being distracted. If I’m looking for a certain shape and come across a piece that I recognize might fit somewhere else I immediately forget what I’ve been looking for and try to find where that new piece goes. The more we work it and become familiar with the shapes the worse our puzzle a.d.d. gets! Still, we recognize that we’re doing it and end up laughing about it which makes the puzzle even more entertaining.
Silly old ladies that mom and I are, we’ve already got an inside joke going about this puzzle that makes us giggle or dissolve in to fits of uncontrollable laughter. My humor is quite dark and dry sometimes so I won’t share the joke here in order to keep from upsetting or offending anyone; but it’s certainly keeping us entertained. She sent me a 3 word text yesterday morning that seriously had me laughing out loud for several minutes. 😆
I haven’t decided if this is it’s own puzzle or part of a larger one, but I’m attempting to forget about that and just relax and enjoy putting it together. A five pound box of vintage wooden puzzle pieces with no clue as to image, size, or piece count turns out to be one of my best purchases in a while!
Aaaaand we’re off! Mom and I finally starting working on her Christmas present yesterday and I’m not exaggerating at all when I tell you we had a fantastic time just sorting the pieces. 😍
Here’s the slightly terrifying (for me) part – I think the entire box may all be one puzzle! The pieces shown above are perhaps 1/5 of the box; I think these monotone colored pieces may be the sky part of the image. I’m a bit skeered! It isn’t going to be an easy or quick assembly and if it’s all one image it’s going to HUGE. Even if I’m wrong and there is more than one puzzle the amount of color line cutting that we found tells me it’s going to take quite a bit of concentration. We’re up to the challenge of course, we’re part of The Posse; but I confess to freaking out a bit and having to take my anti-anxiety meds. 😱
These are all hand cut wooden pieces, and although I have no idea what year this puzzle was crafted I can tell you they’re unbelievably intricate and well made. The fit would blow your mind! When you find pieces that fit together they FIT – we could take joined pieces and flick our wrists as hard as we could and they will not budge. It’s amazing! Even with tight-fitting cardboard puzzles I’ve never seen a fit like this; I can only imagine the teeny-tiny saw blade. Astounding! This is definitely a multi-exclamation-point puzzle!!
These are only some of the whimsies, the number of fascinating, beautiful, symmetrical shapes is way too many to show all at once. I’ve also pulled some of the color line cutting to show – cut around people, edges of buildings, tree trunks, etc. It’s going to be a photograph of the municipal building in New York according to the only words we found. It looks to be one of those photographs with hand coloring (painting atop a black and white photograph to add accents or large areas of color); most of the pieces are a sepia tone with some green added for trees, the very small American flag is painted with color, etc. It was the best time I’ve ever had sorting a puzzle – we were fascinated by every piece.
Here’s what we’ve put together so far, many of the shapes are fun, weird, interesting, cute, odd, and just….wow. (If you’re wondering, yes, this is the colored side up even though it looks as though there’s no color). I’m so excited to see the finished image, but it may take quite some time. I’ll give updates when I can – in between deep breathing exercises and moderate amounts of pharmaceuticals. Stay tuned!
100 Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix – Hartmaze – 253 pieces
My son gave this puzzle to my mom as a Christmas present, and the three of us assembled it on Christmas Day. We found out that it is so much more difficult assembling an intricately cut puzzle with no whimsy pieces, but we had a great time working together to assemble it anyway. It is really lovely quality for only a $25 wooden puzzle, and I was thoroughly impressed!
I’ve only ever found Hartmaze puzzles on Amazon, and they only seem to carry a few different images to choose from. But I found the quality to be excellent, and I would definitely love to assemble more.
There’s a self-imposed puzzle buying ban at My Jigsaw Journal for the moment, but eventually I’m sure I’ll be buying one of my own. 🙂
Sea Anemones by Ernst Haeckel – NookPuzzles – 596 pieces
This is another new wooden puzzle company that I found and gave a go. They’re beautifully thick pieces with a stunning image reproduction. I was worried that the dark background would make the puzzle more challenging, but it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I’d thought.
Such a great puzzle image! Ernst Haeckel’s book Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature) has provided puzzlers the world over with stunning illustrations that make for entertaining and beautiful puzzles. Every time I see a puzzle image by Haeckel there’s great temptation – they’re so detailed and realistic and look like they’d be so fun to put together – and they are!
So many whimsies! All sorts of sea creatures – turtles, seahorses, lobsters, starfish, dolphins, etc. – plus a few things from the land like palm trees and a lighthouse. The blue “N” is the logo for NookPuzzles. Computer technology and lasers are awesome! Can you imagine trying to cut out these shapes with an actual jig saw?
I love the 2 fish swimming together here (the whimsies on the left), is it possibly Nemo and his dad? And the purple anemone was my favorite, the color is so lovely but the picture really doesn’t do it justice at all.
I was extremely surprised by and grateful for the free gift sent with the puzzle – a beautiful wooden Christmas tree ornament! 🎄
Free gift aside, I’m still not sure how I feel about this brand after only working one puzzle; am I the only who has certain feelings about something with no explanation whatsoever? I’m on the fence about this brand at this point, but I can’t even tell myself why! The fit was the tightest I’ve found in a wooden puzzle (very nice!), the image is beautiful, the piece shapes are interesting and intricate, but there was something about it that I can’t really put my finger on. Sigh.
Seriously people, my brain is slowly being poached in the sweat from my hot flashes.
