Review: The Bookshop

The Bookshop
The Bookshop by Aimee Stewart – Ravensburger – 1000 pieces

This gorgeous puzzle is an Aimee Stewart – I had no idea! I don’t really check who the artist is most of the time before I start working a puzzle; I just knew the image spoke to me, and thought it would be fun, if a bit challenging to assemble. Well, of course it was – it’s an Aimee Stewart! I put together the entire puzzle and didn’t know until I started writing up this post that it was by my favorite artist.

The quality was fantastic, as per usual for a Ravensburger. Just feeling the weight and finish of the pieces makes me smile; I think I could tell a Ravensburger piece from all others at 20 paces. (Well, maybe 2 paces, these eyes are getting older every day). Holding a piece while contemplating it’s placement and rubbing my thumb across the top of it gives me a quiet kind of happiness, it’s like meditation.

This was a little more challenging than your average Aimee Stewart puzzle; the colors are much more muted, and the scene itself was more difficult. The flowers below the sign and the ivy around the edges were the hardest for me. The books everywhere were less difficult than I’d assumed, even though there are so many of them!

The Bookshop 1

This little girl in her pretty purple frock is so sweet, and it’s such a pretty color.

The Bookshop 2

All those books in the window? You can read the titles, and look at the detail! I should have known who the artist was. I can’t believe I didn’t. I’m hanging my head in shame.

I’d seen this image several times before I finally took the plunge and got it for myself, and am I ever glad I did. Have you been thinking of buying this? Go for it, this puzzle is highly recommended. 👍👍

Review: Vintage Posters (Paris)

Paris
Vintage Posters (Paris) – D-Toys – 1000 pieces

Doesn’t this look like a great time? It was! I absolutely loved it, even though it seemed like it would be quite difficult I found it had the perfect amount of challenge, and wonderful quality.

Puzzler1909 (a fellow puzzle blogger) and I conducted an international puzzle swap so we could work brands that are difficult to get in our home countries. I sent an Artifact wooden puzzle and a Galison; and I received this D-Toys, a Grafika, and a bonus Art Puzzle. (It was one I really wanted, but was missing pieces, so I chose another puzzle. She sent it anyway, knowing how much I like the artist – how sweet was that?)

D-Toys can be purchased in the US, but this image was nowhere to be found at any of my usual puzzle dealers. I’ve found that some of their puzzles aren’t the best to work with, but if you get the “high quality” ones they’re absolutely lovely. The pieces are a good thickness with a nice fit and excellent hand feel, and they are altogether very very nice to work with. This puzzle was hands down the best quality D-Toys puzzle I’ve ever assembled. 🙂

There was a big party in Paris, four years after the Eiffel Tower was built, this is a poster advertising it and I think it’s gorgeous! Although I’m not sure what all the boxes on the left side are showing…

Paris 1

Will the party be so amazing that it blows you away? Is there a tornado coming? It’s very silly, but seriously, what is happening here?

Paris 2

Theater, clowns and music, this was one big bash wasn’t it? Apparently they knew how to throw at party back in the 19th century. 😉

Paris 3

I know this is meant to show that there will be acrobats at the Eiffel Tower, but to me it just looks as though they’re tossing women off head first! All kidding aside, you can see the excellent fit in all of these close up images – it was fantastic, and wonderful to work with.

This puzzle was a joy to assemble, and although I was a little nervous when I opened the box and started sorting it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. I was wondering if assembling words would be more difficult with a language I don’t speak or read, but it turns out it was no problem at all. (Although it might be a challenge with a language whose characters/alphabet are different than English) The quality, the fit, the image – they all made for a fantastic assembly and a really good time. Many, many thanks to Nicola at Puzzler1909 for swapping puzzles with me – I am so looking forward to assembling the other two!

If you can find this puzzle and the image appeals to you, it is very highly recommended! 👍🗼

Review: Solar System

Solar System
Solar System – Melissa & Doug – 48 pieces

Now this is the kind of quality I love to see on a kids puzzle, extremely thick pieces, great fit, beautiful image reproduction, and a finish that you can clean off to keep the puzzle in good condition. An excellent puzzle all around, and even though it was only 48 pieces I had a great time putting it together.

Melissa & Doug puzzles are excellent quality, and even though all of their puzzles that I’ve assembled have been secondhand, I’ve always found them to be excellent quality. They take care to make puzzles that will withstand the rough and sometimes careless play of children; the chipboard is extremely thick and sturdy, and the finish is one that can be cleaned off if a messy or sticky hand is used to put pieces together. 🖐

Educational puzzles like this one always make me smile, and even if I know all the information they’re still fun. I’m a big proponent of giving children jigsaw puzzles, they’re so good for developing brains! They help teach problem solving, spatial awareness, hand/eye coordination, and many other skills that help young brains learn and grow.

Delightful puzzle with amazing quality – it is very highly recommended – I loved it!

Review: Farmers’ Market

Farmers' Market
Farmers’ Market – MasterPieces (Trendz) – 300 pieces (EZ grip)

While I enjoyed the bright colors and interesting image, the very shiny finish and extremely slippery backing made this puzzle a bit difficult to assemble and VERY difficult to photograph. It was entertaining to put together, but I ended up with a negative impression of it partly because photographing the puzzle is the last thing I do, and this one was a bugger to take a picture of!

I work under artificial lights, but with my fabric covered board it’s usually easy to get a good photograph – the chipboard backing on the puzzles sticks to the fabric and doesn’t move when I lean the board up against the wall. Taking pictures this way takes care of glare from the lights, and makes it easier to get a picture of the puzzle straight on. This puzzle though, with it’s slippery paper on the backing just kept sliding right off! Since I couldn’t lean the board even a little bit I had to take a picture with the board flat and ended up with quite a bit of glare. It took many pictures and much more time than usual to get a good picture. It was extremely frustrating. 🤬

The puzzle itself had large, thick pieces that fit together well, but unfortunately that’s where my positives end. The backing didn’t have a good feel in my hands, the finish was extremely shiny and caused glare under the lights, and the image reproduction made it very easy to tell that this was a digital collage. I’ve worked many, many, many collage puzzles – I would say that most of them have been digitally altered or assembled – but this was the first puzzle that made it glaringly obvious.

I’ve been going back and forth about whether or not to recommend this puzzle to my readers. On the one hand I enjoyed the actual assembly, but on the other hand I had several issues with the quality (that didn’t involve picture taking). It all depends on what characteristics are most important to you when assembling a puzzle. I found the image to be bright and colorful – and also too shiny with a very obvious digitally altered image. The chipboard was thick with a good fit – although the backing felt odd and almost sharp in my hands.

Overall the puzzle itself had good quality, and I mostly enjoyed the assembly, so it is recommended (even though if I came across another of these Trendz puzzles by MasterPieces I would pass it on by). It’s not my pile of pieces, but it may be yours. 🙂

Review: The Prague Clock

Prague Clock
The Prague Clock – Nautilus Puzzles – 500 pieces

My husband surprised me with this puzzle; and not only was I surprised that he bought it for me, I was surprised that he picked such a great image too. It turned out to be a fantastic, well-made, very challenging puzzle and I absolutely loved it. Well done hubby!

The image is of the Prague clock, which I knew nothing about when I received this puzzle, but it lead me to do some research on it and I was fascinated. It was built in 1410, and is the oldest working astronomical clock in the world! The clock face gives you all sorts of information; if you know how to read it you can tell the date, how long until sunrise or sunset, the location of the Sun on the ecliptic (which tells you the date in relation to the sign of the zodiac), what lunar phase the moon is currently in, and, oh yes, it tells time too (both current standard time and Ancient Bohemian Time). It makes for a great puzzle image too!

Nautilus puzzles is a newer wooden puzzle company, started in 2018. I was highly impressed by the quality of the puzzles, but even more so by the cut of the pieces. The cut is exceptional; it is designed so that every single piece touches at least one of the whimsy pieces – which makes for wonderfully varied shapes and a much more challenging assembly. Their catalog is large and varied as well, and along with some images you see quite often in puzzles they’ve got some very unique images as well. They weren’t in business when I started my wooden jigsaw puzzle experiment three years ago, because I definitely would have given these a try. Their smallest puzzles start at around $15, which is quite affordable in my book.

If you’re into astrology, you’ll recognize many of the whimsy shapes. I recognized the zodiac symbols, but not all the rest of them.

Prague Clock whimsies

This is quite a large number of whimsies for only a 500 piece puzzle, and they all match the “theme” of the image. It was fun to sort through the pieces and find all the interesting whimsies, it’s one of my favorite parts of working with wooden puzzles. 🙂

Prague Clock 1

All the whimsies were themed towards time, astrology, astronomy, etc. In this corner you can see the phases of the moon! That’s going an extra step, instead of just throwing whimsies around in between pieces they’ve put some thought into the design. It made for quite an entertaining assembly, and I will definitely be buying another puzzle from this company.

Hubby did an awesome job picking out this puzzle, it was a joy to assemble and I absolutely loved it! It was exceptionally well made, expertly designed, and was great fun to put together – it is very highly recommended!

*Also, as usual, I recommend giving wooden puzzles a try if you haven’t before. There are many affordable companies out there, like Nautilus, and we puzzlers are definitely worth a splurge now and then. If you can’t bring yourself to buy one, how about requesting one for a birthday or Christmas present? You’re so worth it!
