The Dr. Seuss Collection

The Dr. Seuss Collection – The Op/USAopoly – 1000 pieces

Of course I loved this one! Who can resist some Theodor Geisel? The first time I saw it online I immediately purchased it – even though my previous puzzles by USAopoly weren’t the best quality.

Didn’t care.

Had to have it.

I’m so glad I did!

The quality of this puzzle was much different than previous puzzles I’d assembled by USAopoly. The brand seems to now be The Op/USAopoly, and the improvement is quite significant. The pieces are thicker with a very good variety of shapes, have a linen-type paper on the front (somewhat like Cobble Hill) that gives the pieces a great hand-feel, and the fit was excellent.

The pieces were (for the most part) extremely easy to sort so I thought I’d do them line by line. But the orange of the ground in Fox in Socks was almost the exact same color as the orange background in Green Eggs and Ham. It was easiest to just assemble both orange sections at once rather than try to just put together Green Eggs and Ham. So once the line by line plan was out the window the OCD kicked in and I decided to assemble all the sections around the outside and leave The Cat in the Hat for the end.

My brain is weird, I know that. Having that little bit of a different section already assembled doesn’t seem like a big deal, but that’s not what my brain thought. It was a big deal and I had to change my plans in a way that made sense to my weird mind. I no longer question the eccentricity – I just embrace the peculiar and try to go with it. 😜🧠

I’ve always loved the story that Theodor Geisel was given a list of 250 words that were important for first graders to recognize and was challenged to write a book that children couldn’t put down. He came back with The Cat in the Hat. Even though he had already published many children’s books that were relatively popular, The Cat in the Hat became an international success because of it’s simplified vocabulary and the fact that it could be easily read by beginning readers.

My kids all love to read, and I credit Dr. Seuss books for much of that. They not only loved to read them on their own, but they also wanted them to be read aloud to them – of course that duty usually fell to mom. One Fish Two Fish and Fox in Socks were both favorites, and at one point I could recite both books in their entirety from memory having read them so often to my babies. 💕📚

This puzzle was passed along to my honorary grandson who ADORES puzzles, and he was so excited to assemble it that I got a picture from his mom just over three hours after I dropped it off – he completed this 1000 piece puzzle in just a few hours! His mom said he never moved from the table after I left, and didn’t even want to stop to eat lunch. My exact words to her were “Holy sh*t! It’s only been a few hours!” 😮

He was there in 2017 when we finally assembled the 40,320 piece Disney puzzle, here he is…

He loved puzzles even then, and we walked around the giant puzzle together and he took a few pieces out of the border and then put them back in so that he “helped” with it. It was so sweet! 💜 When he got home that day, he took the DVD cases from all the movies that they had at home and laid them out on the floor in the order that they were shown in the puzzle. His mom sent me a picture of that too, I wish I still had it!

When he completed the Dr. Seuss puzzle, he went and got all the books he had and laid them on top, in the same way as he put those cases together all those years ago. His mom sent me a picture of that too, and said “Just like your puzzle and the movies.” It was so sweet it was almost heartbreaking!

It makes my heart so happy that he loves puzzles as much as I do, and I thought it might make you smile today to hear this story. It certainly makes me smile! 😊💖

Suess Street

Suess Street – Ravensburger – 1000 pieces

Finally I was able to get a 1000 piece puzzle done, my first since the beginning of January. Yikes! Luckily I was able to make a quick trip to get myself a few puzzles last weekend, and this is one of the puzzles I chose. I love this image, and it’s a Ravensburger so it’s wonderful quality. 🙂

I may have to make a change to the way I sort and assemble puzzles, I find these past few weeks that I have little tolerance for laying out all the pieces, etc. It may just be an attitude problem on my part; I guess I’ll wait and see. For the most part I sorted these by colors, with the brick background pieces sorted by shape. It seemed amazingly tedious, but again I have a bit of a ‘tude lately, so surely that didn’t help. And, it’s the first 1000 piece puzzle for me in more than a month, so there’s that to consider as well.

I love Dr. Suess, and I have many of his books completely memorized because I read them to my kids so often that after a while I didn’t even need to look at the pages. My daughter loved Fox in Socks, and my boys loved Cat in the Hat and One Fish, Two Fish; I was always partial to Dr. Suess’s ABC. This puzzle image makes me smile and remember that time spent reading with my little ones when they were still small.

If you’re a fan of Dr. Suess or Ravensburger, or just enjoy a very fun puzzle I highly recommend this one. Excellent quality with a wonderful image – what more could you ask for?

Review: Incidental Music for a New Year’s Eve Party

Incidental Music for a New Year’s Eve Party by Dr. Suess – Liberty Puzzles – 527 pieces

This was the most entertaining puzzle I’ve ever assembled – it was so much fun! The image, the piece shapes and that it was a wood puzzle made it wonderful. Liberty Puzzles have so many interesting images to choose from, many I’ve never seen before, like the gorgeous one above. I love Dr. Suess!

When I was choosing which puzzle to purchase, I didn’t go for a smaller puzzle to try out the brand, I gravitated toward the larger piece counts from Liberty Puzzles. On their website they have several photos of each puzzle; including one of the whimsy pieces separately, and also a view of the assembled puzzle from the back so that you can see the intricate shapes of all the pieces. The shapes are amazingly detailed and interesting and I just had to splurge on myself and get a bigger one! Click the link above to check out their beautiful puzzles and stunning piece shapes.

Liberty has a dozen images from “The Secret Art of Dr. Suess”. They work with Dr. Suess Enterprises and choose 3 images each year to turn into amazing puzzles. I couldn’t resist Incidental Music for a New Year’s Eve Party – although that name is a mouthful. I love the colors, the characters and especially the piece shapes, they’re Suess-esque!

Before I started the assembly I pulled all the whimsy pieces I could find; look at these gorgeous pieces….

I enjoyed this puzzle immensely; and I took my time because I didn’t want it to end. The feel of the pieces, the beautiful detailed shapes, the gorgeous artwork, the excellent craftsmanship – they all contributed to this being my favorite puzzle ever! Liberty Puzzles have the best whimsies in my opinion, and there are many more than I’ve seen with other companies; about 15-20% of the pieces are whimsies.

I’ve noticed that I work more slowly and carefully when assembling a wooden puzzle. It’s almost like meditation – I’m completely in the moment and focused on the piece shapes, the colors, and on enjoying the puzzle. The pieces are the sturdiest you can find, but I find that I handle them with care, almost reverently. Perhaps it’s appreciation for the detail and excellent quality, or perhaps I’m just trying to stretch out the experience and make the fun last longer – I suspect that it’s most likely both of those things.

I’m in love with Liberty Puzzles and that’s quite dangerous, because I obviously have an addictive personality. My wishlist on their site is into the thousands of dollars! 😮 I won’t be able to get them all, but I’ve worked it out that I might be able to get a few every year. There’s my birthday, and Christmas, and Mother’s Day, and…um…Happy I Love You Day – that’s a holiday, right??

Review: Dr. Seuss I Can Do That Card Game

Dr. Suess The Cat in the Hat I Can Do That! Card Game – Ravensburger

I was a little bummed out when I got I Can Do That to review, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to play it. I was injured several years ago and have had mobility issues since, but I’m still a child at heart. So even though I was looking forward to playing it, I turned it over to my 10 year old product tester instead. Thank goodness cookies keep him on the payroll! 😉

The game is simple, really. There are 24 cards and a foam fishbowl (see the picture above). You lay all the cards out face down, like when you play a memory game. The object is to turn over a red action card, a blue location card, and a yellow fish card. If one of each card is not drawn they are put back and it is the next player’s turn. Remember where the cards are so that you can turn over one of each color on your next turn. Once all 3 color cards are drawn that player has to act out the activity described by the 3 cards, e.g. crab walk to the window with the fish between your elbows. If the player completes that activity they get to keep the cards. The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

I made sure that Levi had the game before Hurricane Irma dropped in to visit, there’s no better time to play games then when the power’s out! Here’s his review…..

He thought this game was fun and interactive (his word not mine). He thought some of the things you have to do are funny and some are hard, such as hopping to the front door and back with the fish on your head! He said you look goofy doing some of the things, but that also makes it fun. He wasn’t sure about the age range starting at 3 years old because some of the things are very difficult to accomplish – even when you modify the game for younger children as per the instructions.

Levi thinks it would be a good family game, maybe for a holiday gathering or family dinner. Also, he says he thinks there should be more cards, because with multiple people the games goes by really quickly. Overall he liked it very much; it kept him moving and there were plenty of laughs too. It gets a thumbs up from Levi. 👍

While I wasn’t able to play it, I agree that it would be a fun game at a family gathering or game night, especially with kids and grownups playing together. I knew that Ravensburger made games and toys in addition to puzzles, but I had no idea the range of games they have available. Click to see all the Ravensburger games available at Puzzle Warehouse. (Mom loves the mandala designers – she has about 4 in her house right now!)

This was a fun review for Levi, but I’m hoping the next game I get to review is something I can play too – I hate being left out of the fun stuff! 🙂
